The Lion in Winter
“The family that slays together…stays together.”
‘Once more, it was a film version which led me to this gem of a script. The Lion in Winter by James Goldman. My notes describe this as ‘ A real zinger of a Xmas with the Plantagenets. A yuletide evening with the acidic royal family as they feud over who will inherit the throne of England. The play reads at the speed of light. In scenes searing in emotion… A real joy to perform but demands all the actors deliver lightning fast exchanges. The language is a sheer delight as each person dances through their lines. Conjuring between them a dazzling series of plots, counter-plots, lies, losers and winners. Their desperation for love, out of this loveless relationship, is raw, wild and deeply funny as it is touching and truthful.’
